Why Do People Use Text Abbreviations?
Abbreviations make texting faster and more casual. They also change quickly: new ones spread on TikTok, Snapchat and Discord every month, and many have more than one meaning depending on context. That’s why our decoder shows examples and links to detailed guides, so you can pick the right meaning for your chat.

5 Tips to Figure Out Any Text Abbreviation
Even with a decoder, some abbreviations only make sense once you look at the whole chat. These five quick checks help you choose the right meaning every time:
- Read the full sentence. “ATP I don’t care” means “at this point,” while a sports chat might use ATP for tennis. The words around an abbreviation usually tell you which meaning fits.
- Check the platform. Gamers on Discord use AFK and GG all the time, while TikTok comments are full of POV, IJBOL and “cooked.” The same letters can mean different things on different apps.
- Look at the tone. Lowercase, emojis and a skull 💀 usually mean the message is playful. All caps or a full stop at the end can make the same abbreviation sound serious or annoyed.
- Think about who sent it. A friend, a coworker and a parent may use the same abbreviation in very different ways. When the sender is older, the meaning is often the classic one.
- Still unsure? Just ask. Replying “wait, what does that mean? 😅” is normal. Most people are happy to explain, and it is better than guessing wrong.
Popular Text Abbreviations by Category
Our decoder covers hundreds of terms, but most chats use a small group again and again. Here are the most common ones, grouped by how people use them. Click any term for the full guide with examples and replies.
Greetings and check-ins
WSG (what’s good), HYD (how you doing), WYD (what you doing), HBU (how about you) and WYO (what you on) are the usual ways to start or keep a chat going.
Reactions and agreement
IKR (I know, right), FR (for real), NGL (not gonna lie), SMH (shaking my head), IJBOL (I just burst out laughing) and XD show how someone feels about what you just said.
Plans and time
LMK (let me know), OTG (on the go), TMW (tomorrow), AFK (away from keyboard), BBL (be back later) and CYA (see ya) help people make plans or sign off.
Strong feelings
ISTG (I swear to God), IDEK (I don’t even know), ICL (I can’t lie) and ILY (I love you) add emotion and emphasis to a message.
Gen Z and TikTok slang
Not every slang term is an abbreviation. Words like rizz, delulu, aura, cooked, simp and oomf spread fast on TikTok. If the decoder doesn’t find a word, try our Slang Translator or the Gen Z slang dictionary.
Why One Abbreviation Can Have Several Meanings
Text abbreviations are created by users, not dictionaries, so the same letters often get picked up by different groups. “TS” can mean “this s***” in a TikTok comment but “Taylor Swift” in a fan chat. That is why the decoder shows more than one meaning when needed and adds a real example for each one.
For a full printable list, see our texting abbreviations A–Z list. Gamers can also check the Discord slang guide, and parents can start with Gen Z slang for parents.
